Bruce MacFarlane
Mr. MacFarlane has nearly 40 years of experience in the business and financial services industry as an investor, a mergers and acquisitions specialist and a senior advisor to companies worldwide. Mr. MacFarlane founded two private equity firms focused in the business services area: Venturion Capital in 1998 and Aquiline Holdings in 2005. While at Aquiline, in 2005, Mr. MacFarlane was also a founder of Validus Reinsurance, a $1.1 billion Bermuda-based reinsurance start-up that went public in 2007. In aggregate, Mr. MacFarlane has invested approximately $2.5 billion in more than 50 private growth equity/venture stage companies since 1998. Aggregate returns on all investments have been in excess of 2.5x.
He currently serves as: an Advisory Board member of IA Capital Group, an insurance technology venture capital firm; Chairman of Patientech LLC (a smart fabric and wearable technology company); and, until its recent merger with Clean Air Group, Chairman of BioClimatic Inc., an air cleaning technology company. Mr. MacFarlane has also served on numerous boards of financial and business services technology portfolio companies
From 1992-1997, he ran Smith Barney’s financial services mergers and acquisitions practice. Mr. MacFarlane developed a significant track record of creating, sourcing, structuring, negotiating and executing mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic alliances among financial services firms domestically, internationally and across borders.
In 1991-1992, he served as the Director of Financial Institutions and Senior Advisor to the President for the Cabinet-level RTC Oversight Board which set the strategy, policy, and regulatory framework for the $120 billion U.S. savings & loan clean-up. Prior to the Oversight Board, Mr. MacFarlane was a senior manager in the Strategic Services Division of Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) and for Oliver, Wyman & Company, a strategic management consulting firm, working with major companies around the world. Mr. MacFarlane also worked for Data Resources, Inc. as an economist and consultant in both the Insurance Group and the Defense and Aerospace Group.
Mr. MacFarlane earned his A.B. with Honors in Chemistry from Harvard College and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
